Vision for London

London is a wonderful city and home for people from all backgrounds, faiths, cultures and ethnicities. I have lived in London for most of my life and would like to now help shape it by working with Liberal Democrat colleagues on the London Assembly to formulate new ideas and represent Londoners’ interests.

Democratic London - A directly elected Mayor of London must be accountable to the public and the Assembly. The Assembly must be able to scrutinise the Mayor rigorously and to set strategic directions for the city. London’s democratic deficit can be reduced by improving the transparency and accountability of the decision making process, giving people at borough and more local level more influence and boosting confidence in our elected representatives.

Moving London – One of the most important features of a great city is its public transport system. Our transport system must be run more efficiently and be more affordable. I want a London which is so well connected that public transport is widely seen as a better option than private cars.

Green London – Recycling and renewable energy for domestic and business is a top priority. There must be greater incentives for conversion to green energy sources. Responsible energy consumption must be at the top of the political agenda and we must work in partnership with businesses to improve energy efficiency.

Safe London – London needs safer neighbourhoods where police work closely and visibly in better partnership with local communities. The way forward is not to alienate people (particularly the young) by issuing more ASBOs, but work to reintegrate people into the community and correct their behaviour through supervised rehabilitation programmes and innovative educational opportunities.

Secure London - Communities must work together to avert terrorist threats against our city. In our democracy we have room for alternative views and dissent but we have no room for violence. I will work with all communities to send this clear message and demonstrate the importance of participation and dialogue.

Affordable London – London’s affordable housing shortage is an absolute priority; the solutions offered at present are piecemeal. Increasing our social housing stock is the key, but it will not on its own solve this continuing crisis. I am determined to find new, creative and more comprehensive ways to tackle our housing crisis.

Olympic London – The Olympics must be delivered on time and within budget. A successful games will give great strength and pride to Londoners as well as being a source of economic regeneration and opportunity. I will work with my Assembly colleagues to ensure that the costs remain manageable. Londoners should not be unfairly burdened with any unforeseen costs and I will work hard to protect Londoners’ interests.
